Karuizawa
Our Karuizawa hotel resides on Nakasendo, a road through the mountains that has connected Nihonbashi in Tokyo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto since the Edo Period – one of the most attractive of the five main roads of ancient Japan. The area boasts charming streetscapes, and buildings designated as Tangible National Cultural Properties. Our hotel will feature a spacious courtyard and two restaurants, and as in times past, is the perfect sanctuary to welcome weary travelers.

Nakasendo is the longest of the five main roads of Japan, and built by the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled the country during the Edo Period. There were 26 post towns located along the route in Nagano Prefecture, and Karuizawa Post Town was one of the most prosperous. The town was developed as a summer resort after the Meiji Period. Today, it is easily accessible, only about an hour from Tokyo by Shinkansen bullet train, and a wonderful, natural escape from the hustle-and-bustle of the metropolis. The area is lush with greenery, and features many adorable, narrow walking paths. There is no better place to experience ‘Komorebi’, soft sunlight filtering through the trees.
